# Cross chain messaging with Hyperlane

**Who this is for:** developers who need to pass messages or assets between Lumia and a chain outside the Polygon CDK/AggLayer ecosystem. **You should already know:** [Interoperability](https://app.gitbook.com/s/chmhPiVNAafGw48c4oU2/ecosystem/lumia/architecture/interoperability).

### How Lumia reaches other chains

Lumia's documented route to chains outside the Polygon CDK/AggLayer ecosystem is Hyperlane, a permissionless interchain-messaging protocol: any chain can connect to it without needing prior approval from a central operator, and it lets a contract on one chain send a message that a contract on another chain can verify and act on. It's a general-purpose messaging layer, not specific to any one chain family, which is why it's the tool documented for this role. What Lumia gets inside that ecosystem instead is covered under [Lumia's chain framework and settlement](https://app.gitbook.com/s/chmhPiVNAafGw48c4oU2/ecosystem/lumia/architecture/polygon-cdk-and-agglayer/the-lumia-chain-framework-and-settlement).
