# LUMIA

**Who this is for:** anyone holding, staking, or paying gas with LUMIA who wants to understand what the token does before acting on it. This is a concept page: for the step-by-step swap, migration, and rewards guides, see [Use Lumia](https://app.gitbook.com/s/chmhPiVNAafGw48c4oU2/use-lumia) (linked at each section below).

LUMIA is the native token of the Lumia chain (see [`/reference/networks`](https://app.gitbook.com/s/chmhPiVNAafGw48c4oU2/reference/networks-and-endpoints) for the confirmed chain ID): the asset the network runs on day to day, in the same role ETH plays on Ethereum.

### What LUMIA is used for

* **Gas.** Every transaction on Lumia (a transfer, a contract deployment, a contract call) is paid for in LUMIA, the same as ETH is the gas token on Ethereum mainnet.
* **Staking.** LUMIA is Lumia's staking asset. Specific mechanics (validator staking, delegation, lock-up periods, reward rates) are published where they are kept current, because a docs page is a poor place to keep a rate current.
* **Governance.** LUMIA is positioned as the network's governance token. Whether an on-chain governance process is live today, and what it covers, is not yet confirmed. See [Staking and governance](https://app.gitbook.com/s/chmhPiVNAafGw48c4oU2/use-lumia/staking-and-governance).

### Related products

LUMIA is also referenced in Lumia Power and EcoDrops, a separate holder-facing rewards mechanism documented on its own page rather than folded into this one.
