# DA light client overview

**Who this is for:** operators considering running a lighter-weight verifier than a full RPC node. By the end you'll know what a DA light client checks.

**You should already know:** [Data Availability](https://app.gitbook.com/s/chmhPiVNAafGw48c4oU2/ecosystem/lumia/architecture/data-availability): the concept page for Lumia's DA design.

### What a DA light client verifies

A data-availability light client checks that the data behind a batch was actually published and retrievable, without downloading and re-executing the full chain history the way an RPC node does. It's a much lighter footprint than a full node, at the cost of not being able to serve general JSON-RPC reads itself.

### DA layer and setup

Lumia's published architecture describes Avail as the chain's DA layer. See [Data Availability](https://app.gitbook.com/s/chmhPiVNAafGw48c4oU2/ecosystem/lumia/architecture/data-availability) for that framing.
