Stage 5 Redeem

Who this is for: issuers and holders reaching the end of a tokenized asset's life, either at maturity or an early exit, after the asset has been through Stage 4: Service. This is the fifth and final stage of the asset lifecycle; it is concept content, not a guide to a shipped redemption product.

What redeeming means

Redemption is the reverse of Stage 1: Issue: a holder exits into cash, another asset, or the underlying real-world claim itself, and the on-chain token is burned or otherwise retired. For an amortizing asset this can be a repeating partial-redemption pattern rather than a single terminal event: see the open question flagged on The asset lifecycle.

If the underlying asset was held by a custodian or bailee on the issuer's behalf, redemption is also where that bailment relationship gets executed: the bailee releases or transfers the physical or legal asset per the agreement. See Bailee agreements & common law for what that agreement generally covers.

What Lumia provides today

What the issuer brings

  • The redemption mechanism (burn-on-redeem, buyback, or a similar contract-level pattern).

  • The legal wind-down process for the underlying asset: this is almost entirely off-chain and outside what any L2, Lumia included, provides by itself.

  • Execution of any bailee or custody agreement covering the underlying asset.

This page describes mechanics only. It states no legal conclusion about how redemption is treated in any jurisdiction. That is a determination for the issuer and their own counsel, not this documentation.
